Sami's Science Project

My first science project involved investigating pulse rate. I took 15 subjects and took their pulse rate. I did this by putting my finger up to the wrist or neck, finding the pulse and counting. I counted how many beats I felt in ten seconds and then multiplied it by six. I then took everyone on a walk around our school. Halfway through, I took the pulse again, and then again at the end of the walk. I found the rate is higher halfway through the walk than before and highest after the walk was over. I also found that girls have a higher pulse rate. If I did this experiment again, I would have the same amount of girls as boys. I would also have everyone rest for the same amount of time before taking the resting pulse rate.

Jaden's Hovercraft

Jaden made a hovercraft for one of his projects covering the energy and force standards. He started by getting a board of plywood then cut the general shape of the craft and made the hole for the leaf blower. After that, he put the tarp on. During his experiment, Jaden found out that the tarp works best and the craft floated off the ground. The craft lifted 3 inches in the Venture's classroom. When asked about the project process Jaden said, "You will need a lot of duct tape and time." For more info on his project visit http://amasci.com/amateur/hovercft.html.

Adam's First Science Project

Adam did a project on the scientific method and process. His project involved standing an egg on top of a lightbulb using salt, sand and sugar. Adam started by using a teaspoon of each and it was too much for the egg to stand. He measured out a smaller amount of each and he doubled the amount to get the egg to stand on the light bulb. From Adam's experiment he figured out that sugar allowed the egg to stand up on the light bulb. "The smaller the crystal, the bigger chance it would stand up." said Adam.

Other Project-Based Schools

I forgot to mention that I will include links to other project-based schools so we can all stay informed as best as possible about project-based environments. Check out Valley New School in Appleton, WI.

Welcome

Welcome Ventures students, family, and friends. Please feel free to visit this blog to see what projects the students of Ventures have completed or are developing. There will be periodic updates that if you are a parent, you can share with your son or daughter to help them get ideas for their own projects, if needed. Enjoy!
